# Stablecoin Research Path: Issuers, Pegs and RWAs

> Research the claim behind the token: who issues it, what supports its value, who can redeem it and on which network. Separate a payment stablecoin from a yield-bearing wrapper or tokenised fund. Compare dated evidence and restrictions, then examine the protocol using it. A dollar label or a price near $1 does not settle those questions.

## Research outcome
Build an issuer and redemption evidence sheet instead of choosing from tickers alone.

## Scope and fit
This route cannot verify your eligibility, provide legal advice or guarantee redemption.

## What kind of token am I researching?

Start by distinguishing a payment token, a collateral-backed stablecoin, a synthetic exposure and a fund or yield wrapper. Similar denominations can hide different claims. A token may represent a direct issuer relationship, an on-chain position or a wrapper around another asset; each adds a different dependency.

Use the [stablecoins hub](https://decentralized-finance.io/stablecoins/) for mechanism research and [USDC versus USDT](https://decentralized-finance.io/compare/usdc-vs-usdt/) for issuer differences. For tokenised asset context, read [Ondo Finance](https://decentralized-finance.io/article/ondo-finance/) and [Superstate versus Ondo](https://decentralized-finance.io/compare/superstate-vs-ondo/). Keep reserve evidence distinct from a tokenised product’s investor terms.

## Who can actually redeem the token?

A secondary-market sale is not the same as direct redemption. Check the legal entity, eligibility requirements, minimums, network, time windows and applicable charges in the issuer’s current terms. A transfer may be technically possible while the holder lacks a direct redemption relationship.

For a wrapper, inspect both the wrapper’s exit mechanism and the underlying asset’s issuer conditions. A quoted rate can depend on strategy returns or incentives rather than an issuer payment promise. A bridging or custody layer can add restrictions and failure modes that do not appear in the underlying reserve report.

## What does the peg tracker add?

The [market tools](https://decentralized-finance.io/tools/) show retrieved price observations for their selected USD-pegged assets. They help frame a question about price deviation; they do not establish a reserve audit or an executable quote. Unknown prices are shown as unavailable. Check liquidity at your position size in the market you would actually use.

Read [what happens during a depeg](https://decentralized-finance.io/answers/what-happens-if-a-stablecoin-depegs/) and the [data limitations guide](https://decentralized-finance.io/help/data-freshness-and-limitations/) before interpreting the table. Consider what happens if the issuer, wrapper and lending protocol each respond differently during stress.

## Which evidence should I keep together?

Record one product and one network at a time. Use the primary source’s dates, distinguish verified facts from inference, and revisit the sheet when the issuer terms or protocol permissions change. A useful decision may be that two products answer different needs and should not be ranked as interchangeable.

- Issuer and legal/product documents for the exact token.
- Backing mechanism and dated reserve or portfolio evidence.
- Direct redemption eligibility, timing, minimums and charges.
- Network, token contract, custody or bridge dependencies.
- Transfer controls, freezes, upgrades and accountable parties.
- Yield source, costs and the holder’s claim on proceeds.
- Market liquidity and protocol use during an adverse scenario.
