  • Sequencer and upgrade control. Whether a single party orders transactions, and who can upgrade the contracts holding bridged funds.
  • Exit path. How long withdrawing to the base chain takes, and whether the fast alternative is a third-party bridge with its own risk.
  • Liquidity depth. A chain with cheap fees and thin pools produces worse execution than an expensive chain with deep ones.
  • Ecosystem maturity. Whether the protocols you rely on are deployed natively or exist only as bridged forks.

What goes wrong with either choice

  • Sequencer downtime or censorship on chains that run a single one.
  • Bridge compromise — historically the largest single source of loss in DeFi by value.
  • Withdrawal delays during exactly the period you most want to exit.
  • Thin liquidity producing execution far worse than the quoted price.
  • Upgrade keys allowing contracts holding bridged funds to be changed.
