Protocol

In DeFi, a protocol is a set of smart contracts deployed on a blockchain that provides a specific financial service — lending, trading, yield generation, etc. Examples: Aave (lending protocol), Uniswap (trading protocol), Lido (liquid staking protocol). The term is often used interchangeably with 'platform' or 'application'.

How Protocol works in practice

In DeFi, a protocol is the set of smart contracts implementing a financial service plus the governance around it. Interfaces are just front ends: the protocol is the contracts, and it keeps running whether or not any particular website does.

Worked example

A lending protocol can be used through its official app, a third-party dashboard, or a direct contract call. All three hit identical contracts and get identical treatment.

Figures are illustrative and chosen to be checkable, not live market data.

The mistake that costs people money

Front ends can be compromised, geo-blocked or taken down while the protocol is unaffected. Conversely, a safe-looking interface cannot make a flawed protocol safe.
