RWA (Real-World Asset)
Off-chain assets — US Treasury bonds, private credit, real estate, commodities — represented as tokens on a blockchain. Also searched as real world assets or RWA tokenisation (US: tokenization). RWA issuance bridges traditional finance and DeFi by bringing off-chain yield on-chain. Examples include BlackRock BUIDL, Ondo Finance, and Centrifuge.

How RWA works in practice
RWAs are off-chain assets represented on-chain — Treasuries, credit, property. They bring traditional yield into DeFi, and they bring legal and custodial dependencies that pure crypto assets do not have.
Worked example
A tokenised Treasury fund holds short-dated government debt through a regulated structure and issues tokens against it. Holders earn the underlying yield, and transfers are typically restricted to whitelisted addresses.
Figures are illustrative and chosen to be checkable, not live market data.
The mistake that costs people money
The claim is legal, not cryptographic. A contract can prove the token exists; it cannot compel a custodian to honour redemption. Jurisdiction, structure and transfer restrictions are the substance here.
