Brendan Eich

Brendan Eich is one of the most consequential software engineers of the internet age — the creator of JavaScript, the programming language that powers virtually every interactive website in the world — and a pioneering figure in blockchain-based digital media economics. His invention of JavaScript in just 10 days at Netscape Communications in 1995, under pressure from senior management to ship a language to compete with Java, remains one of the most improbable and influential programming achievements in history.

After his time at Netscape, Eich co-founded the Mozilla Foundation and later Mozilla Corporation — the non-profit organisation that produces Firefox. As Mozilla's CTO and then briefly its CEO in 2014, he shaped much of the open-source browser landscape. His resignation from Mozilla's CEO role in 2014, following controversy over a personal donation to California's Proposition 8 campaign in 2008, was one of the most publicly debated episodes in tech industry history.

In 2015, Eich co-founded Brave Software with Brian Bondy, launching the Brave browser in 2016. BAT operates as a utility token within the Brave ecosystem: advertisers spend BAT to serve privacy-respecting ads; users who opt into Brave Ads receive a share of the advertising revenue in BAT; and publishers and content creators receive BAT contributions from users as a direct-to-creator payment mechanism.

Brave's advertising model eliminates third-party data brokers by keeping all user attention data local — on the user's device — rather than sending it to centralised servers. Advertisers pay for verified attention without knowing which specific users viewed their ads. This architecture, which Eich called the Basic Attention Ledger, represented a genuine attempt to rebuild digital advertising economics from scratch on privacy-preserving cryptographic foundations.

From a standing start, Brave grew its monthly active user base to over 70 million by 2024 — a remarkable achievement against entrenched competitors backed by Google, Apple, and Mozilla. The browser's combination of native ad blocking, automatic HTTPS upgrades, fingerprint randomisation, and Tor integration made it the leading privacy-focused browser for technically sophisticated users.

Brave Rewards, the BAT-based content creator payment system, enrolled over 1.5 million verified publishers and creators — allowing users to automatically tip websites, YouTube channels, and Twitter accounts with BAT based on their browsing time. This represented the first large-scale, functioning implementation of web monetisation that did not depend on advertising or platform intermediaries.

Eich has been a consistent voice for open web standards and against platform monopolisation. His dual status as the person who created the language that underpins the modern web, and a credible critic of the surveillance economy that web infrastructure enabled, gives him a unique moral authority in debates about the future of internet monetisation. BAT's token design — aligning the economic interests of users, advertisers, and publishers — remains one of the most intellectually coherent utility token models in the industry.

JavaScript, despite its famously rushed origin, became the definitive language of the web. Every major browser runs JavaScript natively; Node.js brought it server-side; and frameworks like React and Vue.js turned it into the foundation of modern application development. The language's quirks and inconsistencies — a direct result of its 10-day creation — have been widely documented, but its ubiquity is absolute. Eich's role as JavaScript's creator gives him a unique standing in computing history.

In the blockchain context, Eich's contribution through Brave and BAT demonstrated early that crypto tokens could be designed as genuine utility instruments rather than speculative assets, with real-world demand derived from a functioning product with millions of users. The BAT model influenced subsequent thinking about how blockchain-based media economics could work at scale.
