Gavin Wood is a software engineer and protocol designer whose work sits at the intersection of distributed systems, cryptography and programming language design. He emerged as a prominent figure in the blockchain space through early involvement in open source and research communities, bringing a systems‑level perspective to the problem of decentralised computation. His technical reputation rests on contributions that combine formal specification with practical engineering, targeting performance, determinism and security.

Wood's early public profile grew as he took on technical leadership roles in the nascent Ethereum community. He contributed both to the theoretical underpinnings and to concrete tooling, emphasising specification and predictable execution for decentralised applications. That blend of research and implementation would shape later projects, where he has repeatedly sought to move beyond proof‑of‑concept protocols to production‑grade platforms intended for wide developer adoption.

Wood was an early co‑founder of Ethereum and served as one of its principal technical architects. He authored the Ethereum Yellow Paper, a formal specification of the Ethereum Virtual Machine, and played a leading role in the creation of Solidity, the high‑level programming language used for writing smart contracts on Ethereum. Those outputs helped crystallise a developer ecosystem around deterministic smart contracts and contributed to Ethereum's emergence as a general‑purpose blockchain platform.

Following his work on Ethereum, Wood founded Ethcore—later renamed Parity Technologies—a company focused on building performant, secure blockchain infrastructure. He also established the Web3 Foundation to support research and development for a decentralised web. Through those organisations he led the design and development of Polkadot, a multichain protocol oriented around interoperability and shared security, and Substrate, a modular framework intended to simplify building custom blockchains. Wood's public commentary and technical agenda emphasise an interoperable, decentralised web in which specialised blockchains can connect and share security while enabling rich application logic. He has advocated architectural approaches that separate consensus, execution and governance, and he has been an early proponent of integrating WebAssembly (WASM) into blockchain runtimes to broaden the range of safe, high‑level languages available to developers.

In recent years his work has focused on maturing networks, tooling and standards to support broader adoption: advancing Substrate as a developer toolkit, guiding Polkadot's evolution around parachains and shared services, and funding research through the Web3 Foundation.
