Juan Benet

Juan Benet is a computer scientist and technology entrepreneur recognised as one of the key architects of decentralised web infrastructure. His work centres on peer-to-peer networking, distributed systems, and content addressing—technical challenges that underpin modern internet architecture. Benet's vision extends beyond individual applications to systemic reimagining of how digital information is stored, transmitted, and verified across networks.

Before founding Protocol Labs, Benet developed a strong background in computer science and distributed systems theory. Launched in 2020 after several years of development, Filecoin allows participants to earn cryptocurrency by providing storage capacity to the network. The project combines cryptographic proofs of storage, consensus mechanisms, and economic incentives to create a market for decentralised data storage, addressing the challenge of ensuring data durability without relying on single operators.

Benet's broader vision extends to reimagining internet infrastructure as fundamentally decentralised and content-addressed. He argues that current internet architecture, built on location-addressed servers, creates dependencies on centralised entities and leaves data vulnerable to removal, censorship, or loss.
