Spagni became the lead maintainer of Monero, a decentralised privacy-focused cryptocurrency that emerged from the CryptoNote protocol. Monero distinguishes itself through mandatory privacy features including ring signatures, stealth addresses, and RingCT, which obfuscate sender, receiver, and transaction amounts by default rather than as optional features.

As Monero's public figurehead and maintainer, Spagni has overseen significant protocol upgrades and community coordination.
