Vasiliy Shapovalov

Vasiliy Shapovalov is a software developer and blockchain engineer based in Rostov, Russia. He built his expertise in distributed systems and cryptographic protocols before transitioning into decentralised finance. His technical foundation spans software architecture, systems design, and blockchain protocol implementation, positioning him as a core infrastructure builder rather than a financial innovator.

Prior to co-founding Lido, Shapovalov worked extensively on staking infrastructure and validator operations through P2P Validator, where he continues to serve as Chief Technology Officer. This background in validator management and node operation directly informed the technical design of Lido's liquid staking mechanics.

Shapovalov co-founded Lido to address a critical friction point in Ethereum's proof-of-stake transition. Following the Merge in September 2022, Ethereum staking required locking 32 ETH for extended periods, creating barriers for smaller token holders and institutional participants. Lido's solution introduced liquid staking derivatives, allowing users to deposit ETH and receive stETH, a liquid token representing their stake whilst earning staking rewards in real time.

As a technical co-founder, Shapovalov oversaw the smart contract architecture, security audits, and protocol upgrades that enabled Lido to scale to over 30% of Ethereum's total staked value. The protocol's design emphasises minimising smart contract risk through modular validator management, multiple client diversity, and decentralised oracle networks. His work established Lido as a foundational piece of Ethereum's staking infrastructure.

Beyond Lido's initial launch, Shapovalov has guided the protocol's evolution across multiple blockchain ecosystems, including deployments on Polygon, Solana, and other networks. He has been involved in governance discussions surrounding Lido's decentralisation and the balance between technical soundness and accessible liquid staking for diverse user bases.

Through P2P Validator, Shapovalov built one of the earliest professional staking infrastructure platforms, serving institutional clients and individual validators. P2P Validator's focus on operational reliability and security shaped approaches to validator management that informed Lido's design. His dual role bridged the gap between professional staking operations and retail-accessible liquid staking.

Shapovalov's contributions extend to broader Ethereum infrastructure discussions, particularly around staking centralisation risks, validator economics, and the technical trade-offs inherent in liquid staking. He has participated in protocol governance and worked to address concerns that Lido's dominance in staking presents risks to Ethereum's decentralisation, advocating for validator diversity and distributed node operations.
