New readers who want to understand DeFi before interacting

DeFi Learning Path for Beginners

Begin with the difference between a wallet, token, network and protocol. Then learn how permissions, stablecoins and transaction costs work. Follow the ordered guides below and check your understanding before researching an external app. You can complete this learning route without buying tokens, connecting a wallet or making a deposit.

Your research outcome

Explain the main dependencies and recognise when you lack enough evidence to proceed.

Scope and fit

Readers seeking guaranteed income, a token tip or recovery of lost funds need a different service.

What should I understand first?

A wallet lets you authorise actions with keys; a token is an asset recorded on a network; a protocol is a set of rules implemented through contracts or other systems. Those are different objects. A familiar token name does not prove that a website, contract or network is the one you intended to use.

Read What is DeFi? and the wallet selection guide. Write down which network an example uses and who controls its keys. If you cannot explain the action a signature authorises, pause the practical exercise and continue the written learning instead.

Why learn risk before a transaction walkthrough?

A walkthrough explains the normal path. Understanding failure modes helps you recognise when that path no longer applies: a contract changed, a website was compromised, liquidity disappeared or a price source became unreliable. An audit and a large deposit total are inputs for research, not guarantees.

Use the DeFi safety guide and due-diligence checklist before following any instructions in an external app. The publication’s calculators need no wallet, so you can explore hypothetical values while learning.

Which subject should I learn next?

If your question concerns holding a dollar-denominated token, follow the stablecoin learning path. If it concerns supplying or borrowing, follow the lending and yield path. If you only need a definition, use quick answers or the glossary before committing to a long guide.

Do not treat this route as a sequence of purchases. The links form a reading order. The Uniswap guide explains a transaction workflow, but finishing the path does not require making that transaction. Compare a worked explanation with the current official interface before treating it as actionable.

How do I know whether I have understood the basics?

Explain the example in your own words without relying on a token’s marketing name. Keep unknowns explicit. A useful beginner outcome is recognising a missing permission, unsupported network or unexplained cost before a transaction, rather than completing a transaction quickly.

  • Identify the network and exact token, not just its ticker.
  • Explain what a wallet signature or approval would permit.
  • Name who can change protocol settings.
  • Distinguish token price, interest rate and available withdrawal liquidity.
  • Find the current primary source for the mechanic you are researching.
  • Know which question you still cannot answer.
